We are a husband-wife team based out of Richmond, Virginia. We actually met because of data analysis that Alex was doing early on in his career in Washington, D.C.. He had identified embezzlement within one of the companies he was working with. I was a college intern at the time helping with the legal proceedings that ensued. We connected immediately and have always shared a respect for the power of data and the importance of quantifying business decisions. Had it not been for the story the data told more than 20 years ago, we would have never met. — Angela
The Short and Sweet Version
Alex Cordero is a numbers guy and data whiz. He is more operationally focused than most CFO’s and is interested in learning the dynamics of the industries he works in so that he can think strategically as well as financially. He is a natural problem solver but more importantly, he always seems to know the right questions to ask and the areas of business which deserve the most focus in order to make a bottom-line difference.
Angela Cordero is an energetic go-getter with an attention to detail. She works to ensure client relationships are successful. Angela enjoys crunching the numbers and creating data visualizations but also likes to share data stories verbally and in writing. Her skills mix well with Alex’s to produce high quality deliverables.
The Whole Story
Prior to launching Lasso Data Partners, Alex worked for more than 20 years for companies with multi-unit retail and service operations. Most recently, he served 10 years as CFO of Car Pool, LLC, a full-service car wash chain. He was responsible for preparing financial statements, analyzing operations, and forecasting results. His focus was on building revenue, cutting costs, and developing dashboard type forecasting tools for store level managers as well as owners. He took the initiative to lead marketing efforts that included the use of electronic and print media to successfully increase new customer trials and returning customer frequency.
Prior to Car Pool, much of Alex’s career was spent in the restaurant industry, with two different restaurant groups in Washington, D.C. As Controller for Austin Grills Inc., Alex managed all financial functions and played a key role in expanding the company from 2 to 8 units. He worked directly with owners, store managers and chefs to improve each restaurant’s financial performance. As part of the executive management team for Austin Grills, Alex also performed financial analysis for related restaurant partners Jaleo and Café Atlantico.
Before becoming Controller of Austin Grills, Alex was an Internal Auditor for Capital Restaurant Concepts in D.C. where he created and implemented internal controls for a multi-unit restaurant company. In that capacity, he identified embezzlement by an employee and helped the company eradicate fraud. Prior to that, Alex’s passion to be a part of the restaurant industry was sparked during his tenure as a store-level accountant for the corporate offices of McDonald’s. It was there that he laid a solid foundation for multi-unit analysis and accounting best practices.
Alex earned a BBA degree in Accounting from James Madison University in 1988 and passed the CPA exam in 1990. He has been working with spreadsheets since 1984 and more recently has become a power user of Microsoft’s business intelligence tool, Power Pivot, as well as the DAX (Data Analysis Expressions) language.
Alex draws on his real-life financial and operational experience with small growing businesses to help his clients make good strategic decisions. His own experience coupled with his prowess using powerful data analysis tools makes him a valuable partner.
Angela has worked as a consultant for fourteen years. Most recently, she was an IT Project Manager for ICF Ironworks where she worked in the application maintenance practice managing the development and deployment of enhancements to clients’ websites and business applications. As a project manager, analysis was key and required that Angela create project budgets and schedules in order to ensure that resources completed their work on time and on budget. Prior to ICF Ironworks, she was an IT Project Manager for iXL, Inc., an interactive agency, as well as Bond International Software, a staffing and recruiting software provider.
Before becoming an IT consultant, Angela was a Staff Economist for Economic Consulting Services (ECS) in Washington, D.C., a leader in the field of transfer pricing analysis. While at ECS, Angela evaluated the transfer prices used by multinational companies and their foreign subsidiaries for the sale of tangible and intangible property to determine whether they were in accordance with U.S. tax regulations. Angela became interested in software customization and project management while at ECS when she became the in-house expert on Standard & Poor’s Compustat financial database and was asked to design proprietary screening programs to automate ECS’s standard method of analyzing corporate financial data. She worked independently to customize the software, create user manuals, and train all of her colleagues on the database tools.
Angela holds a Master’s degree in Economics from University of Maryland at College Park. She earned her bachelor’s degrees in Economics and in Political Science from Hood College in Frederick, Maryland.
